The Integumentary System
The integumentary system contains the largest organ in the body: the skin. It also consists of the hair, nails, and the exocrine glands. The main function of the skin is protection, as it acts like an outer covering that protects inner organs from chemicals, disease, UV light, and physical damage. The skin is made up of three thin layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and the hypo-dermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer that we can see. It covers the entire body and contains keratin, which helps to waterproof our skin, and melanin, which gives our skin our various pigments. The Dermis is located below the epidermis, and is a layer of vascularized tissue in the skin. This is the layer of skin that has elastin, which gives our skin its elasticity. This layer is also where our skin gets its strength. Finally, below the dermis is the hypo-dermis. This serves as a connection between the skin and organs that lie beneath is, and it is made up of mainly fatty tissue.
